  4. Nova Chess is a chessprogram for MS-DOS.
  5.  
  6. Requirements:   CPU 80386 or better
  7.                 installed mouse driver
  8.  
  9. Copyright:      Nova Chess is Freeware. It may be copied and used without
  10.                 charge. It is not allowed to sell this software nor to make
  11.                 any modifications to it. All rights are reserved by the
  12.                 author.
  13.  
  14. Controls:       - The menu appears when the mousepointer is placed at the top
  15.                   of the screen and vanishes when the mousepointer is moved
  16.                   downwards.
  17.                   If a topic on the menubar is selected, you may exit without
  18.                   making a selection by pressing the right mousebutton.
  19.  
  20.                 - To make a move click seperatly on the FROM square and on the
  21.                   TO square.
  22.                   To deactivate a selected piece just click on it again.
  23.  
  24.                 - To stop the computer from calculating a move press the
  25.                   right mousebutton. The computer will make its move
  26.                   immediately.

  28.                 - With the following function keys you can change the colors.
  29.                   There are 64 colors to choose from.
  30.                   The specified function key increases the value by 1,
  31.                   together with SHIFT it decreases the value by 1.

  33.                   F1 - changes the color of the black squares
  34.                   F2 - changes the color of the white squares
  35.                   F3 - changes the color of the black pieces
  36.                   F4 - changes the color of the white pieces
  37.                   F5 - changes the color of the border
  38.                   F6 - changes the color of the text
  39.                   F7 - changes the color of the background
  40.                   F8 - changes the color of the overscan
  41.  
  42.                   F9, SHIFT+F9, F10 and SHIFT+F10 show default colors.

  50.                   Starts a new game.

  52.                 Change sides
  53.                   Switches the sides without turning the board. The computer
  54.                   starts to compute its move immediately.

  56.                 Rotate board
  57.                   Turns the board without switching the sides.
  58.  
  59.                 Take back
  60.                   Takes back a halfmove. You are allowed to take back as many
  61.                   moves as you wish.

  63.                 Exit
  64.                   All changes you have made to colors, levels and options will
  65.                   be saved. After this the program terminates.
  66.                   Note: The actual game can't be saved.

  69.         LEVELS

  71.                 Time
  72.                   Specifies the time the computer will take for calculating
  73.                   its move. The program stays within the selected time-limit.

  75.                 Depth
  76.                   The program stops calculating when it reaches the specified
  77.                   depth. This setting is used to limit the horizon of the
  78.                   program in order to reduce its strength.
  79.                   Beginners should use the setting 2.
  80.                   The computer may take some time to calculate a move if you
  81.                   choose 6 or more halfmoves.

  87.                   Toggles the sound on/off.

  89.                 Random
  90.                   The computer does not only play the best move but less good
  91.                   ones, too. The program is slower with this setting on.

  94.                   The line of best moves (=main line) is displayed at the
  95.                   bottom of the screen.
  96.                   Beginners get some hints by examining the second move of
  97.                   this line because the computer calculated it as the best
  98.                   response.
